Preparing for your trip:
Guatemala is largely a cash economy, and it will be helpful to have some quetzales on hand (especially small bills). That said, in Antigua it is often possible to use credit cards as well. If you need an ATM while in Antigua, we recommend using the machines at one of the banks on the western side of the central plaza.
Getting to Antigua:
There are a variety of ways to get to Antigua from Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City.
- Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín will be coordinating a shuttle for conference participants. There will be a single pickup and dropoff time tba.
- There are private car services that can arrange a pickup / drop off at your chosen time. These run between $30-$40 (though be sure to confirm the price with your driver). We recommend Ernesto Lopez, who can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. You should have cash on hand, and paying with either dollars or quetzales is equally viable.
- If you are the last minute sort, no planning is necessary. Directly on exiting the airport, there will be a variety of people operating passenger vans looking for passengers to Antigua. They will literally be saying “Antigua”, or asking you if you want to go to Antigua. The price is around $10. You might have to wait a bit for your driver to find enough passengers to make the trip, though we have never experienced a wait of more that 15-20 minutes. You should have cash on hand, and paying with either dollars or quetzales is equally viable.
Staying in Antigua:
Antigua is a major tourist destination. As such, there are a variety of accommodations available, ranging from hostel to 5-star hotel.
At the higher end ($150+) we like Hotel Posada del Angel. Also quite nice is Meson Panza Verde ($85+).
There are lots of mid-range hotels for $30-$60. Check out Hotel Convento Santa Catalina, Hotel Posada Doña Luisa, Hotel Posada Don Vicente, Casa Antigüeña, and many more.
As far as hostels (<$20), Hostel Casa Jacaranda is nice and quiet. So is Adra Hostel.
There are many options for food, drinks, and shopping in central Antigua, where most hotels are located.
Getting to the Conference Site:
The conference site is the Sala de Conferencias at Cooperación Española-AECID. It is centrally located in Antigua, and so should be walkable from your hotel.
